In November 2002, the EN13724 standard for mailboxes was approved.

Later, it was published in 2003 and updated in November 2013 in all European countries, repealing all regulations previously in force. The regulation becomes the only reference in the European market on the theme of mailboxes.

The EN13724 standard provides for the regulation of the production of mailboxes in terms of dimensions. In addition, the mailboxes must be burglar-proof and must safeguard the privacy and security of people.

Dimensions: the mailbox must contain envelopes and magazines in A4 format, without problems of damage or folding. The depth of an envelope is about 24 mm. The minimum volume established by a ream of A4 sheets is 40 mm. This guarantees the correct delivery of normal parcels.

Anti-withdrawal and sturdiness: once the mail has been introduced, the box must be equipped with an anti-withdrawal device that prevents it from being taken by unauthorized persons; the door must have a resistance of at least 15DAN, resistance against corrosion according to DIN EN 1670 and against the infiltration of water (maximum 1 cc).

Installation: the mailboxes must be easily accessible to the letter carrier with the name of the holder and the user clearly visible. The central point of the box must be between 700 mm and 1700 mm, exceptionally between 400 mm and 1800 mm. There must be no sharp edges for the safety of the letter carrier.

Privacy: in order to guarantee it, there must be no inspection peepholes in the mailboxes.

Location: mailboxes should be installed at the property line, on the public street or in a freely accessible location. Boxes must be grouped together at a single access point in the case of multi-family buildings, commercial complexes, business premises, unless special conditions have been agreed with the post office.
